This collection contains records of land petitions and land board proceedings from Upper Canada (modern-day Ontario) and Lower Canada (modern-day Quebec) between the years 1784 and 1853. Records typically include the name of the individual, date of the petition, and location of registration. Sourced from Library and Archives Canada, this collection is subject to LAC’s Terms and Conditions.

Following the Constitutional Act of 1791, the colony of Quebec was divided to create Upper Canada and Lower Canada. Military and civilian settlers submitted petitions to the Governor to obtain Crown land. Sons and daughters of Loyalists were also entitled to free lands. Land Boards were created in 1789 to oversee land matters, to facilitate settlement in the four districts of Hesse, Nassau, Luneburg and Mecklenburg, and to grant certificates of location to the settlers in these districts.
